Glossary

Common sports terminology used in the API responses, in plain English.

General

  • Box score — A statistical summary of a game, broken down by team and player.
  • Play-by-play — A chronological list of every notable event in a game.
  • Standings — The ranked order of teams by wins, points, or league-specific tiebreakers.

NBA

  • PER — Player Efficiency Rating; a single-number summary of per-minute production.
  • TS% — True Shooting Percentage; weighted shooting accuracy that accounts for 2s, 3s, and free throws.
  • USG% — Usage Rate; the percentage of team plays a player "uses" while on court.
  • +/- — Point differential while the player is on the court.

NFL

  • EPA — Expected Points Added; the change in expected points a play produces.
  • WPA — Win Probability Added; the change in win probability a play produces.
  • YAC — Yards After Catch.
  • Air yards — Yards in the air on a pass play (excluding YAC).

MLB

  • Statcast — MLB's league-wide pitch and batted-ball tracking system.
  • wOBA — Weighted On-Base Average; a more accurate version of OBP that weights each outcome.
  • xwOBA — Expected wOBA based on exit velocity and launch angle.
  • FIP — Fielding Independent Pitching; ERA-scaled estimate based on outcomes a pitcher controls.

NHL

  • Corsi — Shot attempts (on goal, missed, blocked).
  • Fenwick — Like Corsi, excluding blocked shots.
  • xG — Expected Goals; modeled probability that a shot becomes a goal.
  • PDO — On-ice shooting % + on-ice save %. Reverts to 100 over time; far-from-100 suggests luck.

Soccer

  • xG / xA — Expected goals / assists.
  • PPDA — Passes per defensive action; lower means more aggressive pressing.
  • BTTS — "Both teams to score", a common betting market.
